San Francisco, CA (September 6, 2024) – Today, officials from the Presidio Trust and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) were joined by community leader to cut the ribbon on a new terminus for the Muni 30 Stockton at the Presidio’s Crissy Field. The new facility extends the popular bus route farther west into the park while adding much needed public restrooms. These improvements will better connect the national park site to other San Francisco visitor destinations served by the Muni 30, including North Beach, Chinatown, and Union Square, as well as BART and Caltrain.

“San Francisco continues to be a leader in transportation, and what a fitting moment to celebrate the new Muni 30 Terminal at Crissy Field during Transit Month,” said Mayor London Breed. “Our City is home to iconic parks and outdoor spaces, and this expansion helps bring visitors and residents all across the Bay Area to the Presidio with its incredible views and outdoor activities. I’m proud that we continue to find affordable and sustainable ways for people to travel to our most treasured destinations.”

The extended route and new terminus will make it easier and more comfortable to access the Presidio’s northern waterfront, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Presidio Tunnel Tops, which has hosted three million visits since it opened in 2022. The new terminus will be a short walk on newly created accessible sidewalk to the future Outpost Meadow picnic area, opening next summer. Now under construction, that project will convert 1.5 acres of parking lot adjacent to the Outpost playground and Sports Basement to park land with picnic tables seating 200 people, gardens and shade, bike racks, and easy access to the nature playground for families.

“Since we want the Presidio to be visited and loved by everyone, we need to make sure it’s easy to get to the Presidio without a car,” said Presidio Trust CEO Jean Fraser. “Muni 30 is one of six bus lines that come directly into or right outside the park. We’re so grateful for SFMTA’s partnership in creating so many ways to get to the Presidio by bus.”

“The 30 Stockton connects kids in Chinatown, seniors in Yerba Buena and tourists in Fisherman’s Wharf to one of the most spectacular parks in the world,” said SFMTA Director of Transportation Jeffrey Tumlin. “It also connects directly to BART and Caltrain, welcoming visitors from all over the region to experience Presidio Tunnel Tops. We’re so thankful to the Presidio Trust who has worked closely with us for years to make this project a reality.”

The new MUNI terminus is one of several transportation projects under the Presidio Forward umbrella, all with the goal of improving access and safety for those walking and biking. This month the Trust will begin repaving four miles of roads while adding features to make people riding bicycles feel more comfortable. The work will also improve sidewalks, curb ramps, and several bus stops.

By fall of 2025, three new battery-electric buses will be added to the free Presidio GO Shuttle fleet, making 40% of the fleet all-electric, and adding a first bus charging station. E-bike share ridership is popular in the Presidio, with plans to expand on the current number of five Bay Wheels docking stations. Ridership is up 59% compared to 2023, with more than 16,000 rides taken in 2024, partly due to the installation of the new station at Crissy field.

Project Funding

The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Lands Transportation Program (FLTP) have funded several major transportation infrastructure projects in the Presidio through the 2022 Infrastructure Bill, approved by Congress. These improvements include the purchase of battery electric buses, installation of electric vehicle charging stations, repaving of park roads, and the new terminus for Muni’s 30-Stockton route.  The terminus is also funded in part by a State of California Natural Resources Agency Grant which will also funds the Outpost Meadow, an extension of Presidio Tunnel Tops.

About the Presidio and the Presidio Trust

The Presidio is one of America’s most visited national park sites, located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is the ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone. Spanning 1,500 acres next to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio is among the most biologically diverse parks in America. It became a military post under three flags, and subsequently a national park site in 1994. Today, its facilities have been reinvented as museums, restaurants, hotels, homes, and offices. The Presidio Trust is the federal agency that stewards the Presidio, in partnership with the National Park Service and with support from the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. The Trust sustains the Presidio by leasing homes and workplaces and offering visitor amenities. Learn more at presidio.gov and @presidiosf.
