Paving Plus Project

We're making it easier and safer to get around the Presidio.

Improving Access & Safety with the "Paving Plus" Project

(Updated June2025)

We’re making it easier and safer to get around the Presidio on foot, bike, wheels, and public transit through the Pave Plus project. From late summer 2024 through summer 2025, we’re:

  • Repaving roads and public parking areas
  • Adding bikeways and restriping and adding safety features for bicyclists
  • Improving crosswalks and striping
  • Rebuilding sidewalks and curb ramps to improve access for all, including people using wheelchairs and strollers
  • Replacing guardrails
  • Improving some bus and shuttle stops
  • Improving signage

The goal is to create a great experience for everyone who is strolling and rolling, and to help us all share the roads more easily. This work is made possible thanks to a grant from the Federal Highway Administration. It’s part of Presidio Forward, through which we’re completing long planned and urgently needed improvements to the park’s infrastructure, open spaces, and historic buildings.

By the Numbers
  • 1 mile of new bikeways added
  • 3 bus stops improved
  • 4 miles of roads paved
  • 9 parking lots paved
  • 45 sidewalk curb ramps added
  • 55% of guardrails upgraded
  • 1,000 feet of sidewalk added/improved

SCHEDULE: What to Expect Next

West Pacific Avenue (see #5 on map; between Arguello and Presidio)

Timing: Mid-February through early July

From mid-February through early July, we’ll be making improvements on West Pacific Avenue near the Presidio Wall Playground to formally make this area one of the Presidio Shared Streets. Our goal is to make it safer and easier for people who are walking and biking. We’re also improving water drainage and upgrading parking. Work will involve a temporary reduction of parking spaces and intermittent road closures from mid-February through early July.

The project includes:

  • Installation of pervious parking along the south side of the street that allows water to drain.
  • Creating a vehicle turn around at the midpoint of the road to allow for safe drop-off access.
  • Repaving and striping the roadway.
  • Adding a vehicle closure midblock to eliminate vehicle cut-through traffic.

To date, we have improved the parking area next to the roadway, including drainage.

Remember that the eastern portion of West Pacific Avenue is permanently closed to vehicles. No cut-through traffic is allowed.

What’s Coming Next?

In mid-June we’ll regrade the western portion of West Pacific Avenue. We will also install a permanent turnaround barrier at the midpoint of West Pacific Avenue to eliminate vehicle cut-through traffic and allow for safe drop-off access.

This work will require a full closure of West Pacific Avenue between Arguello Boulevard and midway between Laurel Street and Locust Street – including Spruce Street access – from June 15 through early July.

During this time, the eastern portion of the road and the Mountain Lake Trail will remain open to pedestrians accessing Presidio Wall Playground. The parking area located off Presidio Boulevard will also stay open as an alternative drop-off area. See map below for alternate route and parking map.

Multi-Site: Parking Lots and Street Segments (see #1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #9, #10, #13, and #14 on map)

Timing: Through Early July

Beginning in mid-June, we’re making surface improvements to the pavement at various parking lots and roadways throughout the park.

The surface treatment will help preserve the current pavement by protecting the surface from damage caused by weather and heat. When the material is applied to streets and is drying, access to the impacted roadway or parking lot will not be possible.

Those who park along impacted street segments may encounter delays and temporary loss of access to driveways. Plan to park along nearby, unaffected roadways, like Compton Road or Wyman Avenue, instead. Access restrictions will last for one day at a time.

From Thursday, June 12, to Friday, June 20, expect to see crews working intermittently at the locations below. Standard work hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Impacted Parking Lots

  • Monday, June 16: Presidio Golf Course Clubhouse Parking Lot (Building 300)
  • Thursday, June 19: Inspiration Point Overlook Parking Lot
  • Friday, June 20: Hardie Avenue Parking Lots (Buildings 42-50)
  • Friday, June 20: French Court and Graham Street Parking Lot (Building 220)

Impacted Roadways

  • Tuesday, June 17: Wedemeyer Street
  • Tuesday, June 17: Battery Caufield Road (north end)
  • Wednesday, June 18: Mason Street
  • Wednesday, June 18: Sheridan Avenue and Fisher Loop
  • Thursday, June 19: Washington Boulevard (between Compton Road and Park Boulevard)
  • Thursday, June 19: Bowley Street (northern end, from Gibson Road to Lincoln Boulevard)

In advance of the one-day closures, you may also see crews on Thursday, June 12 sealing minor cracks on the roadway to prepare for the surface treatment. This work will not require a road closure or parking restrictions. There will be one lane open for through traffic, along with flaggers to help you navigate the area.

  • One traffic lane will remain open most of the time. For limited periods, both lanes will be closed for up to 20 minutes.
  • Roads will be rough during construction. Avoid the area when possible, considering alternative routes instead (see map below.)
  • No parking will be allowed on Washington Boulevard; access in or out of parking areas may be intermittently delayed up to 20 minutes.
  • Work is weather-dependent, so timing may shift.
  • Expect a reduced speed limit of 10MPH during work hours.

What’s coming next?

  • Smoother pavement for a better walking and riding experience.
  • Adjusted Shared Streets traffic calming to ease traffic congestion.
  • Improved curb ramps for those strolling and rolling.
  • Washington Boulevard will remain accessible to vehicles, with a continued speed limit of 15 MPH.
  • A more accessible, connected park for all.

This work is part of Presidio Forward, through which we’re making long planned improvements to the park’s infrastructure, open spaces, and historic buildings. The result will be an even more beautiful and welcoming Presidio that’s resilient for generations to come.
