Presidio of San Francisco (December 13, 2010) — If your holiday plans don’t call for going over the river and through the woods, there is a bounty of free or affordable holiday fare available at the Presidio.

Celebrate Christmas Eve with an evening of Christmas carols and worship as the Presidio Interfaith Center hosts its annual Carol Sing and Christmas Mass. The event, which is sponsored by the White Robed Monks of St. Benedict, takes place Friday, December 24 at 7 p.m. at the Presidio’s Main Post Chapel. A pot luck dessert follows the service. For more information or to RSVP, visit www.whiterobedmonks.org/xmas.

Enjoy the holidays at the Walt Disney Family Museum. This month, the museum is hosting a special holiday screening of Christmas with Walt Disney. See how Walt Disney celebrated Christmas at the studio, at Disneyland, and at home. The film includes The Nutcracker Suite from Fantasia (1940), Pluto’s Christmas Tree (1952), scenes from the television Christmas specials, and rarely seen home movies of Walt Disney and his family. Showtimes are 1 and 4 pm daily (except for Tuesdays, and December 5, 11 and 25) through December 31. For information on this and other holiday programs, visit www.waltdisney.org.

Artistic Director Sherene Melania creates a magical winter wonderland when the Presidio Dance Theater presents Beyond the Land of Sweets on Sunday, December 19 at the Herbst Theater. Students ranging in age from three to 18 share the stage in this wonderful, holiday performance that is perfect for the entire family. Beyond the Land of Sweets begins in the Nutcracker Ballet’s “Land of Sweets” then travels the world celebrating holidays across various cultures. For ticket information, visit www.presidiodance.org. Proceeds benefit the scholarship and education programs of the Presidio Performing Arts Foundation.

And don’t miss your last chance to see intersections5: colors_concepts_contours, presented by fiber/DIMENSIONS. This unique and colorful exhibit closes December 19. From silk to steel, fiber/DIMENSIONS artists use a wide variety of materials and employ an array of disciplines ranging from weaving, felting, quilting and paper making to painting, woodworking, printing and welding to create their pieces — all of which are bound together, literally and figuratively, by fiber. The exhibit is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Presidio Officers’ Club. Admission is free.

The Presidio Trust was established by the United States Congress in 1996 to administer the Presidio of San Francisco, an urban national park site that is located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The areas overseen by the Trust include expansive open space and spectacular views, a 300-acre historic forest, and rare and endangered plants and wildlife. The National Park Service oversees the coastal areas of the Presidio. The park comprises nearly 6 million square feet of buildings, including 469 historic structures that contribute to the Presidio’s status as a National Historic Landmark District. The Presidio is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
