Roads and Trails Worker - Term

About the Role

The Presidio Trust is seeking a Term Roads and Trails Worker for an employment period of one year.  The Presidio of San Francisco, the 1,491-acre former Army base at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, is now a new kind of national park. The park includes 477 individually significant historic buildings, about 6 million square feet of office space, and more than 180 historic objects. To date, 325 historic buildings have been fully or partially rehabilitated and are now occupied. Now, these beautiful, historic buildings are revived with new life and new uses for our public visitors, tenants, and employees.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Roads and Trails Worker performs maintenance on roads, trails, other pavement surfaces and masonry structures in and around the Presidio Trust. This work allows for the enjoyment of all who visit the park and surrounding areas.

This is a one-year full-time term position that commences at time of hire with benefits and a starting at $23.41 per hour.  This position is included in a bargaining unit, specifically The Laborer’s International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California. Responsibilities

  • Perform all aspects of road and trail maintenance and repair of Presidio Trail network and right of way areas.
  • Repair of potholes in roadways and other paved areas with hot mix asphalt and cold patch; applying crack and surface seals; and working in construction of new paved areas.
  • Act as flagger/spotter on roadway work; sets barricades, cones, and signage for worksite safety; cleans culverts, curbs, and gutters.
  • Paint curbs and roadway markings using paint brush, roller, and paint spray equipment.
  • Clear and brush trails; install water breaks, drains, culverts and retaining walls; repair washouts, damaged bridges (minor) and bridge abutments, fences, gates, and protective railings; and replacing tread materials.
  • Assist irrigation staff in maintenance and repair of in-ground irrigation systems.
  • Demolish concrete sidewalks, curbs, and walls. Assist masons in mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Assist mechanics in servicing, fueling, and maintaining vehicles and equipment. Move and maneuver equipment and trucks in confined and congested areas.
  • Maintains, replaces, and repairs site furnishings, including emptying of waste and dog refuse containers.
  • Perform work in accordance with safe practices, correcting unsafe situations and practices and demonstrating proper safety procedures to other employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of California Class C driver’s
  • Ability to work weekend shifts, when
  • Ability to perform basic computer functions.

Working Conditions

  • Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Required to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions; occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and hazardous

The Landscape Stewardship Department is responsible for the grounds, forest, roads and trails and natural resources programs throughout the park. Background Investigation and Review

The Presidio Trust has identified this position as subject to an employment background investigation which shall consist of a review of applicable county, state and Federal criminal and civil records, state bankruptcy indexes, driver’s license. An individual’s granting of a background investigation and resulting report is voluntary. However, employment in this sensitive position is contingent upon the successful completion of an employment background investigation. The Presidio Trust may refuse to hire an individual, may rescind an offer of employment to an individual, or may review and terminate the employment of a current employee not successfully completing the background investigation.
