Muni 30 Route Extends to the Presidio

San Francisco, CA (September 1​8, 2020) – Starting Saturday September 19, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) in partnership with the Presidio Trust will extend the 30 Stockton bus route to Crissy Field in the Presidio. The extension creates a lifeline connection for Presidio workers and residents, and connects families in Chinatown, the Tenderloin, SoMa and Civic Center to the ​Golden Gate National Recreation Area directly from their neighborhoods via public transportation.

The bus line traverses Mason Street, which opens to vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic on Saturday following nine months of construction on new marshland under Doyle Drive, adjacent to Crissy Marsh.

The 30 Stockton will have longer, 60-foot buses that will allow Muni to reduce crowding where service is needed the most. Moving the terminal to Crissy Field reduces impacts and crowding for Marina District residents and the new terminal location provides increased space for the longer buses.

Parks have become increasingly important to mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Direct access to parks via public transportation is vital for neighborhoods that have the least access to open space in San Francisco. Presidio visitors enjoy the experience of nature within the city, including miles of walking and biking trails, beaches, scenic overlooks with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay and the city, and picnic and play areas, all at no cost. The 30 Stockton extension not only benefits park-goers, but essential workers who work in the Presidio or nearby neighborhoods.

In the future, the new terminus on Mason Street at Crissy Field, will provide access to two new features in the Presidio. The expansion of marshland at Quartermaster Reach, adjacent to Crissy Marsh, creates nearly seven new acres of wetlands habitat with an expanded trail system, open to the public in December of 2020. And the exciting
Presidio Tunnel Tops will offer 14 new acres of parkland over the tops of the Doyle Drive tunnels, opening in October of 2021.

Says Jeff Tumlin, Director of Transportation at SFMTA,​ “Extending the 30 Stockton from Chinatown to the Presidio reinforces our commitment to ensuring that all residents and visitors to San Francisco have equal access to transportation options, linking communities to park land and open space.”

The northern destination for the 30 Stockton route is indicated as “Ask Driver for Terminal” until system updates allow for the destination advertised as “Presidio/Crissy Field” later this fall. Other Muni bus routes that access the Presidio are the 29 Sunset to Baker Beach, and the 45 Union-Stockton line arriving at the Lombard Gate on Lyon at Greenwich.

In addition, the Presidio Trust offers a free shuttle called PresidiGo from downtown with stops at the Transbay Terminal and the Embarcadero BART to the Presidio. The “Around the Park” route takes visitors around the park.

Details on the 30 Stockton Extension:

• The route extends into the Presidio between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily. All other times, the 30 Stockton terminal will be on Divisadero at Chestnut.
• 60-foot electric trolley buses allow more room for customers to maintain physical distance onboard.
• There will be three stops in each direction within the Presidio:
  • On Mason Street near Marina Boulevard by Crissy Field East Beach
  • On Mason at Halleck Street near the Tunnel Tops park and Presidio Main Post,
  • The Sports Basement store by Crissy Field.
• Connections are offered to Chinatown, Downtown, and Caltrain.
• Daily frequency: Every 12 minutes on weekdays, every 20 minutes on weekends.
