Inn Receives 2014 Historic Hotels of America Award of Excellence
Presidio of San Francisco (October 9, 2014) — Historic Hotels of America has awarded Inn at the Presidio with the 2014 Award of Excellence for Best Small Historic Inn/Hotel. As the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Historic Hotels of America provides the recognition to travelers, civic leaders, and the global cultural, heritage, and historic travel market that member hotels are among the finest historic hotels across America. The Awards of Excellence recognize the pinnacle of this distinct group of nominees in a number of categories.
The Inn at the Presidio, built in 1903 as Pershing Hall, originally housed unmarried officers during the Presidio’s former life as a U.S. Army base. The building was completely rehabilitated and opened in April 2012. It features 22 spacious guest rooms, including 17 one bedroom suites.
“We are honored to be recognized for the Inn at the Presidio,” said Craig Middleton, executive director of the Presidio Trust. “The Inn achieves two of the Presidio Trust’s key goals; rehabilitating historic buildings for new uses, and welcoming the public to experience the park.”
The elegant Georgian-Revival style building was named for General John J.”Black Jack” Pershing, who served at the Presidio and went on to become commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War I, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The interior celebrates the Presidio’s past with artisan details and memorabilia, complemented by comfortable, contemporary furnishings. Historic photographs and regional art bring to life the park’s military history and its amazing Golden Gate setting. Other amenities include an inviting front porch with rocking chairs, a landscaped terrace with fire-pit, guest reception, and a guest lounge with a dining room. The Inn’s stylish design and contemporary furnishings pay tribute to the Presidio’s history while offering all the comforts of modern lodging. The Inn is operated in accordance with Green hotel standards and was awarded LEED Gold certification.
“Historic Hotels of America is proud to congratulate the 2014 Awards of Excellence winners,” said Lawrence Horwitz, executive director of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. “These historic hotels and hoteliers represent the pinnacle in historic hotels and their achievements from Portland, Maine to Waikiki Beach.”
The nominees, which were proposed by fellow members, past award recipients, and honorees, were then selected by an expert panel who judged and weighed the nominees in each category to determine a winner. The winners were then awarded before an audience of more than 200 owners, senior management, invited media, industry leaders, and representatives from across America. Due to its popularity, the Inn at the Presidio recently expanded to include an additional four rooms in a nearby historic house, the Funston House. Rooms at the Inn at the Presidio, the first lodging in the Presidio, have been in high demand since it opened in April, 2012.
