Google Trekker Maps the Presidio's Trails

Presidio of San Francisco (November 25, 2013) – Visitors can now explore the Presidio’s popular trails and overlooks from anywhere in the world with Google’s recently launched Google Maps “Street View” feature showcasing panoramic views from around the Presidio.

“Similar to planning a trip via car, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to explore places around the world through 360-degree, panoramic, and street-level imagery,” said Amy Deck, Presidio Trust Project Manager for Trails Philanthropy. “The Presidio can be difficult to navigate if you don’t know the area. Google Maps ‘Street View’ images will make it a lot easier.”

The priceless panoramic views of eight trails, four popular scenic overlooks, Rob Hill Campground, and Crissy Field were captured by Google as part of their Trekker program. The Trekker team utilizes a 40+ pound, 15-camera backpack system that raises about four feet in height when set on the ground, snapping images roughly every 2.5 seconds in areas typically only accessible by foot. This allows visitors to take a cyber adventure through the Presidio and to plan their next adventure using their smartphone, tablet, or computer with just the click of a button.

”This provides first-time visitors greater confidence about what to expect on specific trails, including people with physical limitations, so that they can pair the visual preview with our trail terrain charts and determine the best route for their needs,” added Allison Stone, Associate Director for Trails and Philanthropic Projects at the Presidio Trust.

In collaboration with the U.S. National Park Service and Parks Canada, Google has already mapped out more than 44 locations, such as Yellowstone National Park, Joshua Tree, the Grand Canyon, and Mount Rushmore.
