Presidio of San Francisco (October 6, 2003) — A group of models, former Pan Am flight attendants of World Wings International and United Airlines Clipped Wings, will strut down a runway inside an old aircraft hangar on Saturday, October 18 during the celebration of “100 Years of Flight” at Crissy Field and display a half-century of stewardess style in the air.
World Wings International, a 2,000 member philanthropic organization of former Pan Am flight attendants, presents three free fashion shows – the first begins at 11:30 a.m. as an event highlight. “100 Years of Flight” at Crissy Field celebrates Orville and Wilbur Wright’s 12-second flight back in 1903, heralding the era of flying. The fashion show, retro by nature, is bound to turn a few heads.
The “World Wingers” are the men and women who flew from 1944 to 1991 for the now defunct Pan Am Airlines, which pioneered the China Clippers, the first 747s, the Vietnam R R flights, and the Gulf War I evacuation flights in the early 1990s. “The Pan Am logo will be missed,” says former Pan Am flight attendant Dorene Goad of World Wings, “but the world has not seen the last of the Pan Am spirit.”
Clipped Wings, organized in 1941 by a former United Airline stewardess is a non-profit organization of over 1000 members. This organization comprised of former and active United Airlines Stewardess and Flight Attendants will perform two fashion shows throughout the day. Clipped Wings is dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities.
The Crissy Field event is free and includes live music, a 1903 Wright flyer replica, lectures, air travel memorabilia, large kite flying demonstrations and flyovers. The Centennial of Flight at Crissy Field is co-sponsored by the Presidio Trust, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.
