Presidio Visitor Updates, Spring 2020

San Francisco, CA (May 07, 2020) – The Presidio’s trails and open spaces remain open for essential exercise, and we’re proud to be a place of refuge and safe recreation for the public during this difficult time.

As a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Presidio Trust has updated its
emergency declaration to keep it in step with the City’s recent extension of its shelter in place order. While not significantly different, the revised declaration does permit more recreational activities, including golf. However, to avoid vehicle congestion, coastal parking lots remain closed and there is limited parking available in the Presidio; driving to the park is not encouraged during the shelter in place order.

Given ongoing restrictions against the gathering of large groups, the following summarizes activities available in the Presidio, as well as some cancellations.

New Opportunities

Presidio Golf Course – Re-opened for Play

Presidio Golf Course is once again open for play. The course is implementing sanitation and physical distancing practices in order to keep visitors safe. With these new protocols, golfers can enjoy a pristine 145-acre, 18-hole public course located in the scenic, urban national park. The Golf Course restaurant, Presidio Café, and the club house remains closed. For more information, visit https://www.presidiogolf.com. Tee times must be booked in advance by calling (415) 561-4661. Drop-ins are not permitted.

The Presidio Loop

Selected roads have been closed to vehicles to allow more room for visitors to recreate while practicing physical distancing, creating the Presidio Loop – a 4.5-mile recreational loop in the park. The road closures will occur on Saturdays from approximately 10 am to 4 pm through the end of May. Currently, driving to the Presidio for this activity is not advised.

Presidio Trails and Open Spaces

The park’s 24-mile trail network, scenic overlooks, open spaces, and beaches remain open. However, many coastal parking lots are closed; and picnic areas, ball fields, tennis courts, and Rob Hill Campground are still off-limits.

Presidio at Home – Virtual Park Experiences

Presidio at Home showcases free online ways to experience the nature, art, and history of this national park site from the safety of home. The website curates the best of the park through free videos, photos, and educational activities with new content added weekly. Offerings include the interactive before-and-after photos of the Presidio Time Machine, interviews with artist Andy Goldsworthy, and the remarkable story of coyotes in the Presidio.

Cancellations

Presidio Picnic / Twilight 2020

The Presidio Trust and Off the Grid have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 season of ​Presidio Picnic and Presidio Twilight. We’ll miss the opportunity to host these events this year and look forward to the day when we can all come together once again to enjoy food and friends within a beautiful Presidio setting.

Memorial Day 2020

The in-person ceremony and other Memorial Day activities originally scheduled for Monday, May 25 at the San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio are cancelled. The Presidio Trust will present special video content on a dedicated web page so that we may commemorate this important day and honor those who have given their lives in service to our country. Check presidio.gov – content will be live beginning Friday, May 22.
