Forestry Projects 2025

Learn about the projects underway this year to create a healthy and sustainable Presidio forest.

Each year, the Presidio Trust revitalizes small groves in our ongoing effort to create a healthy forest. Learn about projects for 2025.

In 2003, we began a long-term effort to replace Presidio trees at the end of their natural lifespan with young, healthy seedlings. As we do this work, we’re bringing back a diverse “understory” on the forest floor beneath the trees by planting coyote bush and dozens of other species native to the park.

Over the course of two decades, we’ve replanted 53 acres with 9,000 young trees, many grown at the Presidio Nursery.

See below for a summary of projects underway this year.

Presidio Reforestation Projects: Fall 2025

Cavalry Bowl Reforestation – Phase 3
In August 2025, we’ll begin the third and final phase of reforestation at the Cavalry Bowl site along Lincoln Boulevard near McDowell Avenue. We’ll remove approximately 60 dead and declining Monterey Cypress and Monterey Pine trees. To manage stormwater runoff from Lincoln Boulevard, we’ll install bioswales before planting a mix of conifer and hardwood tree species. A native plant understory will also be established to enhance biodiversity and stabilize the area.

Lendrum Reforestation
In September 2025, we’ll begin reforestation along Lincoln Boulevard between Lendrum Court and Hoffman Street. We’ll remove approximately 50 overmature and failing Blue Gum Eucalyptus trees and replant a variety of Eucalyptus species as part of ongoing efforts to explore suitable alternatives. After replanting, we’ll establish a diverse native plant understory to increase biodiversity and promote slope stabilization.

Eucalyptus trees adjacent to West Pacific Blvd, east of Arguello, and near the Mountain Lake Trail

Arguello/West Pacific Eucalyptus Thinning and Restoration – Phase 1
In September 2025, we’ll begin the first phase of eucalyptus thinning and restoration along West Pacific Boulevard, east of Arguello Boulevard, near the Mountain Lake Trail. We’ll remove dead, smaller, declining, and competing Blue Gum Eucalyptus trees to support the health of the larger, mature trees. Invasive ivy will be cleared from the understory, compost will be added, and we’ll plant a diverse native understory to improve biodiversity and ecological health in the area.
