About the Role

The Presidio Trust is seeking a Sustainability Planner to join the Planning and Compliance Department. Once an Army Base, the Presidio of San Francisco is now a new kind of national park. The 1,500-acre Presidio is richly layered in history, is a natural oasis for wildlife, plants, and people, and offers iconic views known around the world. In its third decade as a park, public awareness and enjoyment of this exceptional place continues grow.

As the Sustainability Planner, you would lead the development and implementation of the Agency’s strategies to become a model of environmental stewardship and participate in complex professional planning activities, with special emphasis on environmental sustainability. The Sustainability Planner supports the Presidio-wide sustainability planning efforts by preparing and facilitating implementation of sustainability and environmental strategies involving climate action, transportation, land use, open space, urban design, building rehabilitation, multi-modal streetscape plans, storm water management, economic development and place-making.

Our ideal candidate is an innovative, and experienced professional who is committed to environmental sustainability, urban ecology, and public service. You have experience with sustainability planning, outstanding communications skills, strong analytical skills, and you can work effectively with a diverse array of colleagues, members of the public, and customers. You have experience developing both site-specific, and comprehensive sustainability and/or Climate Adaptation plans and have demonstrated an ability to balance complex and sometimes competing priorities. This is a full-time position with benefits and a starting pay range of $108,547 to $123,745, based in the SF Bay Area. The starting base salary is dependent on the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Applications received by August 2, 2024 will receive first consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of Agency sustainability and environmental strategies, and compliance with the Climate Adaptation Plan
  • Interface with professional and technical staff throughout the Trust and assemble interagency teams and workgroups to develop programs and projects that further the Agency’s sustainability goals, with a special emphasis on identifying, prioritizing and implementing carbon reduction projects.
  • Collect and analyze data to determine progress towards Agency targets.
  • Design and maintain metrics and prepare reports as required to inform Agency of progress towards program targets; refine strategies as necessary to ensure effectiveness.
  • Develop, implement, iterate and support land-use policies and regulations that protect natural resources, promotes increased biodiversity and ensure climate change resiliency.
  • Support interagency departments on projects that further Agency goals around potable water use reduction, vehicle and building electrification, building efficiency, biodiversity, and other sustainability goals.
  • Support zero-waste planning and implementation to further the Agency’s zero waste goals.
  • As a member of the Planning Review team, review proposed plans and projects with a sustainability lens, recommending improvements, alternatives and modifications that would further the Agency’s sustainability goals.
  • Perform tasks, as needed, related to complex professional planning projects, research and analysis.
  • Participate in budget preparation and administration, monitor and control expenditures, analyze variances and initiate corrective actions to meet financial objectives in designated areas.
  • Conduct education, training and outreach to Agency staff, tenants and visitors on sustainability goals and practices.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to leadership, stakeholders and the public, as required.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in planning, sustainability or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in the planning/sustainability profession.
  • Experience in sustainability planning or developing climate adaptation plans.
  • Knowledge of urban planning and development, and a specialization such as natural resource conservation or sustainability.
  • Understanding of research methods and statistical principles related to urban growth and development.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective technical reports and presentations.
  • Familiarity with municipal planning, long-range infrastructure planning and administration.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, internet applications, database management, or GIS.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships at various levels.
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical skills to research and interpret data for reports, and apply mathematic techniques in practical situations.
  • Strong writing and reading comprehension skills to write technical memos and reports and review legal materials.
  • Ability to manage projects effectively and meet firm deadlines.

Desired Qualifications

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification.
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation.

About the Presidio Trust Planning and Compliance Team

The Planning and Compliance Department develops and implements innovative, efficient, and inclusive plans and guidelines that advance the Presidio Trust’s strategic goals. This interdisciplinary team includes; urban design and transportation professionals, staff ensuring historic and environmental compliance and sustainability, GIS specialists and permitting experts. The department oversees efficient permitting and compliance processes for all building, landscape, and infrastructure projects to ensure that the Presidio’s significant history and ecology are protected, and that projects advance Trust strategic goals and the public interest.

Background Check and Review

The Presidio Trust has identified this position as subject to an employment background check which shall consist of a review of applicable county, state and Federal criminal and civil records, state bankruptcy indexes, and driver’s license.
