About the Role

The Presidio Trust is seeking a Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator who will support the Park Maintenance Department. Once an Army Base, the Presidio of San Francisco is now a new kind of national park. The 1,500-acre Presidio is richly layered in history, is a natural oasis for wildlife, plants, and people, and offers iconic views known around the world. In its third decade as a park, public awareness and enjoyment of this exceptional place continues grow.

The Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator operates a variety of diesel or gas-powered heavy mobile equipment and performs work such as moving, digging, grading, and rolling, earth, sand, stone and other materials, while maintaining ditches, trails, road shoulders and roadbeds throughout The Presidio Trust in a safe, compliant and environmentally conscientious manner.

This is a full-time position with benefits and a starting at $44.45 per hour, based in the SF Bay Area. This position is included in a bargaining unit, specifically The Laborer’s International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California. Responsibilities

The Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator operates a variety of diesel or gas-powered heavy mobile equipment and performs work such as moving, digging, grading, and rolling earth, sand, stone and other materials, and maintaining ditches, trails, road shoulders and roadbeds throughout The Presidio Trust in a safe, compliant and environmentally conscientious manner.

Responsibilities

  • Drive gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as Front-End Loader, Backhoe, Landscaping Tractor, Road Roller, Excavators, Road Sweeper and other types of equipment associated with Roads and Trails Maintenance.
  • Familiar with the use of various sets and types of controls for operating equipment, trucks, and associated attachments. Handle several sets of controls at the same time requiring good hand, foot, and eye coordination.
  • Move and maneuver equipment and trucks in confined and congested areas.
  • Repair potholes with hot mix asphalt and cold patch and constructs new paved areas; paint curbs and roadway markings using paint brush, roller, and paint spray equipment; assist masons in mixing and pouring concrete; set concrete forms and removes rubble and debris. Demolish concrete sidewalks, curbs and walls.
  • Act as flagger/spotter on roadway work; set barricades, cones, and signage for worksite safety.
  • Clear and brush trails, install water breaks, drain, culverts and retaining walls, repair washouts, damaged bridges (minor) and bridge abutments, fences, gates, and protective railing, replaces tread materials, performs duties as roads worker.
  • Assist machine shop mechanic in servicing, fueling, maintaining vehicles and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Class B Driver’s license
  • Skilled in operating equipment with a high degree of dexterity, i.e., operating motor grader with hydraulic controls, adjusting blade while machine is in motion in order to do fine grading, ensuring the front wheels are properly adjusted for each cut made and maintains control of the machine.
  • Knowledge of roads, trails and grounds work practices, to include buying materials to be used and process of application, keeping erosion to a minimum and eliminating hazardous conditions.
  • Knowledge of measuring instruments in determining sizes of various pins, shafts and other parts required for maintenance of equipment, and reading various elevations for building roads, trails, excavating and landscaping.
  • Knowledge of materials used on roads, trails and grounds and how weather conditions affect the work process.
  • Ability to read and write, interpret blueprints and work instructions in order to cut desired grade on roads, trails, grounds, and to cut metal used in welding to a desired length.
  • Ability to operate many types of equipment, knowing what attachment to use on assigned project.
  • Ability to operate grader or dozer in rough and mountainous terrain.
  • Must have good hand, foot, and eye coordination. Good depth perception and a high degree of concentration are required.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner.
  • Extensive equipment operating experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, work orders, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work independently, work is performed largely without direct supervision.

Physical effort

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, good hand dexterity, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance. Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Background Check and Review

The Presidio Trust has identified this position as subject to an employment background check which shall consist of a review of applicable county, state and Federal criminal and civil records, state bankruptcy indexes, and driver’s license. An individual’s granting of a background investigation and resulting report is voluntary. However, employment is contingent upon the successful completion of an employment background check.
