About the Role

The Presidio Trust is seeking a Carpenter who will support the Building Maintenance Department. Once an Army Base, the Presidio of San Francisco is now a new kind of national park. The 1,500-acre Presidio is richly layered in history, is a natural oasis for wildlife, plants, and people, and offers iconic views known around the world. In its third decade as a park, public awareness and enjoyment of this exceptional place continues grow.

The Carpenter constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures while conforming to local building codes. Uses a wide variety of wood working machines and tools to assemble items with a variety of joining techniques. Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications in order to determine layout, work sequences, types of lumber or special related materials, plans and carries out projects from initial layout to completion in a safe, compliant and environmentally conscientious manner.

This is a full-time position with benefits and a starting at $44.45 per hour, based in the SF Bay Area. This position is included in a bargaining unit, specifically The Laborer’s International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California. Responsibilities

  • Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
  • Select specified type of lumber or other materials and prepare layout and erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Shape materials to prescribed measurements. Assemble cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue
  • Verify trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
  • Erect framework for structures and lays subflooring.
  • Cover subfloor with building paper to keep out moisture and lays hardwood, parquet, and wood‐strip‐block floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base.
  • Apply shock‐absorbing, sound‐deadening, decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
  • Fit and install prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two‐year college or technical school; or Six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skilled in setting up and operating the full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery such as routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses;
  • Skilled in operating and using power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, power activated nailers, combustion type saws, screw fasteners, and table saws.
  • Ability to use advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute and lay out projects, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and the ability to compute ratios and percentages.
  • Ability to independently evaluate problems and determine how or what repairs to make and the type and grade of wood or wood substitute materials and type of tools to use.
  • Ability to accomplish all phases of work independently including work requiring close tolerances, precise fit, and finished appearance.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Skilled in performing routine maintenance on equipment
  • Other duties as assigned.

About the Department

The Presidio is an extraordinary place to work for the thousands of employees of approximately 100 businesses who lease commercial space in the park. Background Check and Review

The Presidio Trust has identified this position as subject to an employment background check which shall consist of a review of applicable county, state and Federal criminal and civil records, state bankruptcy indexes, driver’s license. An individual’s granting of a background investigation and resulting report is voluntary. However, employment in this sensitive position is contingent upon the successful completion of an employment background check.
